One person's junk is another's treasure. The latter is what inspired me about vintage jewelry. Nabbing a garage sale find from heaven, I landed a jewelry box brimming with both glimmering vintage beauties as well as earrings without partners, or so called junk.

While it's depressing to lose an earring, break a necklace or bust a brooch backing, finding a new use for lonely vintage jewelry is a blast. Offering a face lift to personal belongings, it also indulges one's creative whims. Read on to learn how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Unused vintage jewelry or unpaired earrings
  • Glue and ribbon (optional)
  • Any of the following:
  • Picture frames
  • Wicker baskets
  • Wire frame decorations
  • Decorative candles or candle holders
  • Clothing (like t-shirts) that need a boost

Put Vintage Jewelry Pieces to Good Use

  1. Step 1

Sort through your unworn earrings and separate them into piles based on backing: clip-on, wire and studs. Set aside small stones and valuables. The type of earring largely determines the application method required.

Evaluate jewelry pieces by color, group if desired, and notice unique shapes and objects that appeal to your design sense. Set your primary selections aside.

Gather knickknacks and clothing that may benefit from a design boost. Look for solid colors, clear glass and thin metals, like wire frame. Opt for items thin enough to accommodate a clip or wire earring. Alternatively, consider glue or ribbons as backing for larger items such as candle holders.

Experiment and mix and match for your favorite selections. Note that many clip-ons and brooches will not require glue to be attached, so be selective about permanent fixes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some vintage jewelry items may not first appeal to your sense of taste but look fantastic on clothing, household or seasonal goods.
  • Save money on vintage jewelry by buying lots designated as "craft" pieces.
  • If concerned, check the value of vintage jewelry before modifying it in any way.
