How to Spend Less on Holiday Gatherings
Let's face it, grocery prices have sky rocketed and the cost of beverages for a large group is even worse. This is especially true when you have a room full of tipsy guys setting down their beer and forgetting which one is theirs, or a house full of rowdy kids putting down their full can of soda before getting another one. Plan ahead. Don't wait until the last minute because this will lead to rushing which in turn leads to convenience. These two mistakes together lead to more cost.

Warn the people you are inviting that they will be expected to bring a dish and or beverage. Don't believe that just because you are the host, pot luck is out of the question. Not only is it fair, it is also less cost. As a host you will end up spending more money than anyone who is invited, but that is just to be expected.

Make a menu of the main dishes and side dishes that go with them. Don't forget the buns, soda and napkins.

Make a list of the people you intend to invite.

Look at the two lists and consider the attendees, thinking of their finances, how many children they have, and whether or not they can cook. Pick something from the menu that will suit them and they can bring to the party.

Call each family and ask if they will be attending and if they will bring a particular item you have already chosen from the menu.

While everything may not go perfectly it will be easier to wing it for one or two mistakes or forgotten items rather than taking care of everything. Be sure to wash the dishes before your company leaves or deliver their dishes within a few days. This will make them happy to do it again.
