Things You'll Need:
- Instrument (if possible)
- Time
- Communication skills

Step 1
Before joining any high school band, first ask yourself it you really want to commit to this kind of after-school activity. High school bands usually practice almost everyday during the school year and also practice after-school sometimes too. If you are not ready for this kind of committment, do not proceed further. If you are ready, please continue!

Step 2
First, prepare yourself for an interview with the high school band director. Answer the following questions about yourself:
Do I know how to read music?
Do I know how to play any instruments?
Do I own an instrument?
Would I like to learn how to read music?
Would I like to learn how to play a particular instrument?
Would I be interested in using a school's instrument (if available) or would I need to rent an instrument? -
Step 3
Set up an interview with your high school band director. During the interview, explain to your high school band director the answers to the questions in step 2. If you already know how to read music, that is a great advantage to have when joining a new band. If not, be prepared to take some classes and spend some extra study time on learning how to do this. If you already know how to play an instrument, again this is another great advantage to have. If not, be prepared to learn.

Step 4
Figure out if your high school could provide you with an instrument to use or decide whether to buy or rent own of your own. Finding out financing options here is key.
-
Step 5
Listen to what your high school band director has to say. If he/she would like you to join the band, that's great! If not, do not let this small rejection get you down. Try to take some private lessons on the side and eventually ask for an audition in order to be considered for the band.
