Transferring a domain name is easy . . . it's just information you don't need very often. This article demystifies the process of transferring domains from Name.com to eNom.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A domain registered at Name.com
  • Your login and password for your Name.com account
  • Login and password information for your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or YouStart (accounts are free at all three sites)

Step1
Verify that the domain name is eligible for transfer -- that is, that the name has been registered for at least 60 days, is not expired, and is not in Registrar Lock status.
Step2
Log on to your account at Name.com.
Step3
On the "Hello" page, click "Edit Account Defaults".
Step4
Complete the contact information and click "Update".
Step5
To obtain the authorization code, contact Name.com at support@name.com, 720-249-2374, or 202-787-1972. Ask them to send you the authorization codes for the domain names you want to transfer.
Step6
To unlock the domain name, return to the "Hello" page and click the domain name.
Step7
Click "Unlock Domain", and then click "Continue managing domain".
Step8
Now you're ready to create the transfer request at eNom.
Step9
Log on to your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or YouStart.
Step10
In the "DOMAINS" menu, click "transfer a domain name".
Step11
Select "Auto verification" and click "next".
Step12
Type in the domain name you want to transfer, a comma, a space, and then the authorization code. If you have more domains, hit "Enter" and type in the information for the next domain on a new line. Repeat for each domain you're transferring, one per line.
Step13
Set the Registrar Lock, Auto-Renew, Whois, and Password options as you wish.
Step14
Click "next".
Step15
Click "submit".
Step16
When you (or the Whois contacts listed at Name.com) receive the email from eNom asking for approval of the transfer, do so by following the instructions in the email.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are a few unscrupulous businesses that "hijack" names -- transfer unlocked domains to themselves, effectively stealing them. Once you unlock your name, it's advisable to submit the transfer request at eNom quickly, to reduce the time window for any potential hijackers.
  • Make sure the transfer email that you approve is eNom's, not from one of these hijackers!
