Kung fu is a westernized version of a Chinese martial art, which originally incorporated numerous training styles. Practicing kung fu can help maintain weight, tone muscles, increase flexibility and increase your confidence. The kung fu grab and punch technique (lop sao drill) is a basic self-defense move.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grab your opponent's wrist as he throws a punch. Use the opposite side of your body to do this so that you will be crossing over, as if shaking hands. If your opponent is punching with his right hand, you grab with your right hand.

  2. Step 2

Bend your elbow at 45 degrees to block his punch as you grab. You may need to step in to grab and punch. Make sure your thumb and fingers are wrapped around your opponent's wrist for a firm grip.

  3. Step 3

Punch with your free arm high toward the opponent's jaw or nose as soon as you have effectively blocked his punch and have secured his arm with your grab.

  4. Step 4

Practice this move with a partner without throwing punches. Switch sides so that you become proficient with the grab and punch on both sides of your body. There's no such thing as a "lefty" or "righty" in the martial arts.

Tips & Warnings
  • The more you practice any martial art drill, the more coordinated you become. Eventually, you'll be able to grab and punch simultaneously.
