Learning disc golf terminology is highly recommended for anyone who wants to master the game. Talking shop with seasoned players and instructors can be confusing, especially when they describe disc types and flight patterns. You can pick up valuable tips if you just speak the language.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Subscribe to a Disc Golf magazine like Disc Golf World or Disc Golf Magazine. Even visit a reliable Disc Golf web site like Disc Golf Review (discgolfreview.com) or Disc Life (disclife.com).

  2. Step 2

Read everything you can about disc golf. Anything you come across that you don't understand, get it defined either in the medium you found it or from a reliable player who doesn't mind answering questions and helping new players.

  3. Step 3

Some common disc golf terms that are helpful to know include the names of different discs. A driver is designed for long-distance throws, just like its golf counterpart. The approach disc is like a wedge club in golf and is used for slower throws with more accuracy. The putter is what you usually use around the basket.

  4. Step 4

Some frequently used disc golf terms are "taco," "safari golf," "mandatory" and "tee pad."
A taco is a disc that has hit an object at a high speed and become warped as a result of it.
Safari golf is when players make up their own course by mixing up what tee pads to start from and the basket they're trying to get to. The tee pad is where you start a hole from. It can also be called a tee box.
The term mandatory means what it implies; it describes a flight path you have to follow in order to finish the hole.

  5. Step 5

Play Disc Golf and learn the terms as you go. Watch other players and their throws. Ask questions about the terms like "What is that throw called?" or "What kind of disc would you use here and why?"

  6. Step 6

Keep at it until the terminology is second nature.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit DiscLife.com and view the videos of Disc Golf at that web site. Watch different throws because the visual presentations help one learn faster. After watching a few videos, go out and practice the throws.
