How to Buy a Horse Twitch

A horse twitch can help you to hold a reluctant horse still during shoeing, grooming or medical treatments. Twitches come with wooden handles and chains or you can use "humane" twitches with cords and rubber-coated handles. Twitches twist the upper lip releasing hormones in the horses body which relaxes the horse. The twitch if done properly should not hurt a horse.

1. Visit your local farm supply store like Agway, Paris Farmer's Union (see Resources below) or Tractor Supply to find a horse twitches.

2. Look for twitches at online retailers like Dover Saddlery, Horse.com, or Damron International (see Resources below). These retailers typically carry a selection of horse twitches in stock.

3. Visit tack shops and veterinary supply shops. You can also buy twitches from Amazon.com.

Tips & Warnings

• it is best to have a friend help even if using a humane twitch the first time

• don't let the horse see it coming.... they learn what it is and will often head the other way

• If you don't know how to properly use a twitch ask someone with experience to show you how.
