How to Hear the Boston Symphony

The Boston Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1881 and is considered one of the world's premiere orchestras. Its home base is Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. The Orchestra travels to Tanglewood every summer. The BSO made its first acoustical recordings in 1917 and still occasionally records film scores.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Visit the Boston Symphony Orchestra website (see Resources below). Click on schedule. Scroll through the dates or jump ahead to the desired week. Choose the desired concert. Buy your tickets through the Orchestra's secure server. You can pay with any major credit card.

  2. Step 2

    Call BSO's SymphonyCharge at (617) 266-1200 or (888) 266-1200 to buy them over the phone.

  3. Step 3

    Go in person to the Boston Symphony Box Office at 301 Massachusetts Avenue. It's open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  4. Step 4

    Find the best bargain on tickets by joining the Rush Ticket line on the day of the performance. They cost $9 each and are available at 5 p.m. for Thursday evening concerts and 10 a.m. for Friday afternoon concerts. Rush tickets are not available for Friday or Saturday evening concerts.

  5. Step 5

    Buy a subscription to the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Call 888-266-7575 during business hours or 888-833-8193 after normal business hours. If you're disabled, call (617) 638-9431 for information on buying tickets.

Tips & Warnings
  • You'll pay a handling fee of $5.50 for online, mail and phone orders.
  • The Boston Symphony Orchestra moves to Tanglewood in the Berkshires during July and August every year.
