Note the four types of archery bows: long bows, recurve bows, compound bows, and crossbows. Long bows are best for traditional archery. Recurve bows are shorter than long bows and have ends that curve away from the shooter. A compound bow uses cams and pulleys to give the shooter more power with less effort. A crossbow is a short bow mounted on a rifle-like stock that allows the shooter to cock and shoot the bow.

Pick a bow length that is most comfortable for you. Short bows require a release aid. Long bows don't.

Determine your preferred bow weight. Light bows are easier to carry around for long periods, so you might choose one if you intend to hunt. However, heavier bows offer more stability while shooting.

Pick a comfortable brace height, the distance between the string and the bow grip.

Select an appropriate draw weight. Very young children can usually draw 10 pounds, older kids might go to 20 pounds. Most adults can comfortably draw 50 pounds. If you select a draw weight that is too high, your shots won't be accurate and you'll tire prematurely.

Buy a bow with an appropriate draw length. If you buy a draw length that is too long, you will suffer muscle strain, which will cause you to shoot inaccurately and discourage you during target practice.
