Tire dressing increases the life span of car tires and improves the resale value of a car. The protectant coating prevents brake dust build up and the deterioration of the rubber. You'll find the dressing in a variety of forms.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which form of tire dressing you want. There are four types of tire dressing: aerosol, spray-on, spread-on and foam. Most people choose tire dressing that sprays or spreads on the tire because the application is easy.

  2. Step 2

Know the pros and cons of the tire dressing formulas. Tire dressings are either solvent-based or water-based. Solvent based dressings are what most people choose, but the popularity of water based dressings is growing because of claims that solvent based dressings eat through the rubber over time.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a tire dressing that spreads easily. Auto stores sell specialized sponges that help with tire dressing application, but a regular, non-soap based kitchen sponge works well, too.

  4. Step 4

Consider solvent-based tire dressings without a spray nozzle unless you absolutely love spray-on dressings. Solvent based dressings clog the nozzles, making them inoperable.

  5. Step 5

Choose a water-based tire dressing if you buy a spray-on tire dressing. Spray-on tire dressing can cause overspray on your vehicle, and water-based dressings wipe off easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you thoroughly rub in whichever tire dressing you choose. This helps avoid black goo from slinging up all over your car when you drive.
