How to Sue for Violation of Civil Rights

Our civil rights are part of our Constitution and have become ingrained in our history and elements of our domestic freedoms. It's important to understand your civil rights, so that you can identify when they have been violated. If someone imposes on your civil rights, you can sue them for damages.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand what your civil rights entail. Civil rights are enforceable rights or privileges, including freedom of speech, the right to assembly, the right to vote and the right to equality in public places. These rights specify that everyone is to be treated equally regardless of race, sex, national origin, or sexual preference.

    • 2

Gather information about the civil rights violation. Write down all the details including the identity of the perpetrator and when and where the violation transpired. Obtain statements from any witnesses present during the incident. If injuries were involved, take pictures and obtain a doctor's report to verify the extent of the injuries.

    • 3

Find and hire a civil rights attorney. Search FindLaw, a database composed of over 100,000 lawyers to find one in your area with expertise in civil rights cases. Select your state and you will be provided with a list of cities to choose from. You'll then find a list of local attorneys or firms and profile information on each.

Attend required court hearings and other interaction throughout the case. It is important for you to be active in your own case, especially in a civil rights case as you are often standing up for more than just yourself, but also for an entire group of people.

That's a long-winded way of saying "hire a lawyer." If I could afford a lawyer they wouldn't be violating my constitutional rights. No help at all.
