How to Suggest a New Category in DMOZ

As the DMOZ Open Directory Project grows and more sites are submitted, more subcategories have to be created to better organize all of the sites. As a user, you can suggest a new category, but the process is difficult since only DMOZ editors can create new categories. However, once you've made contact, there are two ways an editor make the modification.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

    Suggest Reorganization

  1. Step 1

Suggest reorganization to the editors. Do this if you see a particular category in need of further sub-categorization while you're browsing or trying to submit a site to DMOZ,

  2. Step 2

Open your web browser and navigate to the Resource Zone website (see Resources below). The Resource Zone is a DMOZ-related site with forums that many of the DMOZ editors read. Though it's promoted as an "unofficial channel of communication," it's often the only way to contact the editors directly.

  3. Step 3

Read the posting guidelines and search the FAQs before posting on the forum. You'll also need to register. You can read the forum without registering, but you won't be able to post.

  4. Step 4

Click on "Register," provide an email address and create a password.

  5. Step 5

Open the "Suggesting a Site" forum.

  6. Step 6

Create a post suggesting the change. Include a description of how you would organize it and a list of sites to appear in each category. A DMOZ editor will see the posting and comment on the suggestion.

  7. Make an Editor-Initiated Change

  8. Step 1

Browse to the category you wish to change. Click on the "Become an Editor" link at the top of the page. Fill out the application form. If the category already has enough active editors, your application may be rejected regardless of merit. If the application is rejected, try contacting the editors through the Resource Zone.

  9. Step 2

Start a dialog with the other editors and discuss the proposed change. State your intentions and include a detailed proposal, including which sites would go in which category and what, if any, new categories would be added.

  10. Step 3

Use a search engine to find more sites related to the new subcategories and submit them. Relatively empty subcategories often go unmaintained and may be folded back into the parent category.

Tips & Warnings
  • Resource Zone users are experienced techies who have a low tolerance for duplicate postings or responding to questions that have already been covered. You'll want to make sure that you know what's out there before posting so you don't get flamed (made fun of mercilessly).
