Roller derby has been thrilling audiences since the 1920s. Between the bruising action and the velocity of the sport, there's plenty to watch at a roller derby tournament. Just make sure to give the women on the rink a wide enough berth; you don't want to get hit with a flying elbow.

Instructions

    Understand the Rules

  1. Step 1

Keep an eye on the "jammer" as she tries to circle the pack of skaters. Each time a jammer laps the pack, she'll score a point for her own team. A jammer is encouraged to score as many points as possible within each "jam" session.

  2. Step 2

Watch the "blockers" as they attempt to keep the opposing team's jammer from circling the track. There are three blockers on each team, all gunning for the jammer. "Pivots" help the blockers, providing the last line of defense at the front of the pack.

  3. Step 3

Take a break from the action when a jam ends. Each jam lasts 2 minutes and is officiated by a team of referees on wheels. Each contest is divided into two periods, with multiple jams per period.

  4. Step 4

Learn the chants and theme songs of your favorite teams. Show some love for your favorite players as they skate past by calling their names or numbers.

  5. Step 5

Wear your team's colors so the players can see their fans in the stands. You might be able to buy a t-shirt or jersey of your favorite team. Visit the merchandise stand between jams to buy memorabilia and support the league.

Tips & Warnings
  • Roller derby is a violent sport. The short skirts and bruised flesh might not be appropriate for all ages. If you have young children, go watch a roller derby match alone first so you can gauge its appropriateness.
  • Bring cash when you attend a roller derby event. Many of the derby leagues charge admission prices to help fund their activities. Without the financial support of fans, some leagues wouldn't be able to rent rinks to host tournaments.
