How to Use a Swing Kick for Self-Defense

By using a swing kick to make contact with the legs of an assailant, you can injure an opponent from a safe distance. A swing kick may be one of the most effective weapons in self-defense.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a swing kick when an attacker comes straight toward you. Begin in a sideways stance, with the kicking foot in front. Maintain your balance by pointing your front foot toward your assailant, and your back foot pointing to the side and your heel behind your front leg.

    • 2

Hold up your fists in a fighting stance, which will help with your balance and distract your assailant's attention away from your feet.

    • 3

Pivot suddenly on the ball of your rear foot, and swing your front foot forward toward your attacker. Aim your foot anywhere between the assailant's calf and his kidneys, depending upon your skill in delivering a kick. If you're unsure about your balance, aim lower and concentrate on kicking your assailant's legs out.

    • 4

Push your hips forward as you begin to deliver the swing kick. Ensure that you are still perfectly balanced on your rear leg while you pivot.

    • 5

Bend your knee when you begin the swing kick. As your leg approaches the target, straighten your knee to increase the momentum. Open your hips completely as your leg connects with the assailant.

    • 6

Make contact with the attacker with the instep of your foot. By this time, the toes of your rear foot should be fully pivoted and pointing away from the attacker, with your heel completely off the ground.

    • 7

Kick completely through the target. By following through, you will cause a sweeping motion that will trip your opponent if you are aiming low.

    • 8

Bring your leg back immediately, allowing your knee to bend quickly. This will give the kick a snapping motion, making it difficult for your attacker to grab your leg.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you use a swing kick for self-defense, aim for vulnerable areas such as the inside of the thigh, the groin, the knee, the shins and the calves. You can also use the swing kick to deliver a blow to the kidneys or the stomach.
