While it is best to learn self-defense in person from a trained instructor, you can still use books and videos to practice and apply fundamental moves. Give yourself plenty of room, enlist a training partner and use plenty of pillows and cushions to perfect your techniques.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase self-defense books in order to learn about defense in your home. Choose some of the better-reviewed titles from the experts, such as Bruce Lee's "Fighting Method, Vol. 1," Larry Jordan's "Dirty Dozen: Nasty Fighting Techniques for Any Self Defense Situation" and Joseph B. Walker's "Self Defense Techniques and Tactics." These titles are widely available at most bookstores and libraries.

  2. Step 2

Watch videos on self defense techniques in the comfort of your own home. You can choose from such titles as "Live to Tell About It: Self Defense Techniques," "Combatant: Extreme Self Defense" and "Phil Ross' Ultimate Self Defense Workout." Many of these titles are available on both VHS and DVD, and should be available at most electronics and video retailers.

  3. Step 3

Check out online resources, such as UK-based Dynamic Self Defence, that offer basic instruction on self-defense techniques through a combination of photographs, videos and written text (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Find an appropriate area to learn and practice your self-defense techniques at home. Choose an area that is open and free of clutter, so that you do not injure yourself or break any valuables. You will want to practice away from small children and pets as well.

  5. Step 5

Enlist a friend or a family member to act as a training partner so that you can learn and perfect your self-defense techniques. Have your training partner hold up pillows, cushions and padding so that you can practice your kicks, strikes, punches and evasive moves.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always contain your enthusiasm and aggression when you learn defense techniques at home. Many trips to the emergency room have been caused when a self-taught martial arts student kicks a table, a wall or a good friend.
