Step 1
Select the most appealing hybrid cars and rank them before you contact the rental companies. Popular hybrid models include the Prius from Toyota, the Escape from Ford and the Insight from Honda, but other models debut frequently. You may not get your first choice, but having your own list allows you to set the agenda.
-
Step 2
Research the availability of hybrid cars by telephone or via the Internet. Sometimes, major rental car company websites are a little slow to highlight hybrid car availability. Calling the toll-free numbers for companies such as Hertz (1-800-654-3131), National (1-800-328-4567) and Budget (1-800-527-0700) may be the most direct way to verify availability of a hybrid in your destination city.
-
Step 3
Use the Toyota Rent a Car website to ensure that you can locate a hybrid rental if the major rental agencies don't provide hybrids near you (see Resources below). Toyota rents hybrid cars, such as the Prius, Camry and Highlander, from its dealer lots all over the United States. While you may have to give up the convenience of airport connections, you can ensure you'll get a hybrid if you submit your reservation request well in advance.
-
Step 4
Check the "Green Collection" on the Hertz.com website for hybrids (see Resources below). Even if you cannot locate a hybrid, you may be able to rent a conventional engine vehicle that gets relatively high gasoline mileage.
-
Step 5
Use special discount plans and benefits to offset the generally higher cost of renting a hybrid car. Have membership cards or numbers for AAA, AARP or other applicable groups handy when you make your reservation. Take your card with you when you rent the vehicle.
