How to Join in the White House Easter Egg Roll

The Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House has been a tradition since 1878. Every Easter Monday, thousands of children join in the festivities, which include music, entertainment and food. Many of the Easter Egg Roll activities take place on the Ellipse, an area near the White House where the National Christmas tree stands, and do not require tickets. To join in the actual rolling of the eggs, participants must be 7 years old or under and have tickets. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the National Park Service (NPS) (see Resources below) to determine the date on which they will be distributing tickets to the Easter Egg Roll. Most of the tickets usually are distributed the day before Easter. The NPS office is located in the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion on the corner of 15th and E streets NW.

    • 2

Determine how many people will be in your party. The White House's strict rules state that each person is allowed five tickets as long as there is at least one child who is 7 years old or younger in the group. No more than two adults per party is allowed.

    • 3

Use public transportation to reach the White House Easter Egg Roll. Public parking is very limited in the neighborhoods surrounding the White House. The nearest subway stations to the White House are Metro Center and Federal Triangle.

    • 4

Check the time on your tickets for the South Lawn event. The tickets for each group are timed. If you miss your specified period, you will not be permitted to join the Easter Egg Roll.

    • 5

Arrive at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion early. Officials begin handing out tickets as early as 7:30 in the morning. Many people stand in line for hours before that then to get tickets.

    • 6

Remember that you are a guest at the White House when choosing your Easter outfit. Dress conservatively in clothing appropriate for early spring weather in Washington DC. Bring a sweater or light coat.

    • 7

Participate in the activities happening on the Ellipse on the day of the Easter Egg roll, even if you were not able to get tickets to the South Lawn events. Food, music and other entertainment is available during this time.
