There are literally dozens of different forms and designs for shamrock hats, all of which are easy to make and require very few items. The version most commonly made by crafters is done in two parts and later joined together without sewing or any other advanced craft technique.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Green craft foam
  • Green ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Plastic shamrock charm (optional)
  • Green bead necklaces (optional)
  1. Step 1

Measure the circumference around your head to calculate the inside size of the hat. Add about 1/2 inch to the total to make sure the hat fits loosely over your head.

  2. Step 2

Draw a circle that is the same size as your head, and then draw an additional one (about 2 to 3 inches larger) around it. This will form the brim of the hat, so make sure it fits properly and comfortably. For most people, this will turn out to be 7 inches on the inside and 10 inches on the outside.

  3. Step 3

Use a ruler to draw a rectangle of 6 inches by 5 inches. Cut out the rectangle, making sure you have a nice steady line.

  4. Step 4

Roll the rectangle, and glue the ends so it becomes a pipe shape.

  5. Step 5

Glue the pipe to the brim of the hat, making sure you join the parts from the inside, so the final product looks polished.

  6. Step 6

Wait for the glue to set and cool down, and then roll the green ribbon or bead necklace around the base of the hat so it hides the place where the two parts are joining. You can simply roll the ribbon around, and then tie it up on a knot, or use your glue gun to make sure everything stays in place.

  7. Step 7

Add special accessories, such as plastic shamrocks or lucky charms, to the ends of the ribbon.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a hard time finding green craft foam, you can also use construction paper to make this shamrock hat. Keep in mind, though, that hats made of paper will not stand up well to use and may come apart in strong winds or rain.
  • If you don't want to make your hat from scratch, consider buying a green plastic one and decorating it. You can do that by adding ribbons, wrapping plastic bead necklaces around the base or gluing small plastic shamrocks all around it.
