ASALH (Association for the Study of African American Life and History) is an organization founded in 1915 by Carter G. Woodson, a civil rights pioneer. The association was started to share information about the history of Black America with the world. For over 80 years, there has been a luncheon that recognizes African Americans who have contributed to the mission of the ASALH. The best part is that anyone can attend and enjoy the Black History Month festivities.

Step1
Visit the ASALH website and find out the date of the upcoming luncheon. You can also purchase your tickets there as well (see Resources below).
Step2
Become a member of ASALH. Your membership will allow you to forward the mission of ASALH while enjoying the benefits of membership, which includes a discount on the yearly Black History Month Luncheon.
Step3
Buy your ticket early and take advantage of early-bird pricing. The ASALH website has information on the discounted amount, as well as the cutoff date, to secure discounted pricing.
Step4
Plan other events around the ASLAH Black History Luncheon. Washington, DC has innumerable sites to visit and activities in which to partake. You can spend a long weekend and have a terrific time in DC.
Step5
Purchase a whole table if you will attend with a number of friends and family. This will ensure that your entire party can be seated together and you can enjoy the festivities as a group.
Step6
Advertise your business while enjoying the ASALH by purchasing an ad in the Black History Month Luncheon program. You ad will be seen by all the participants and luncheon attendees.

Tips & Warnings

  • Volunteer for the luncheon. You can get contact information on the ASALH website, but visit early enough to find out all the important dates for volunteers.
  • Remember that Washington, DC is a busy town. Make sure that you make hotel reservations early to ensure that space is available.
  • Keep in mind that ticket sales end approximately 2 weeks before the ASALH Black History Month Luncheon, so do not wait until the last moment to purchase yours if you want to attend.
