A courting seat is another term for a wide chair meant for 2 people. It allows a couple to sit together without getting too close. You can build your own courting seat for Valentine's Day with cushions and blankets.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wooden futon frame
  • Futon mattress or cushions
  • Throw pillows
  • Blankets
  • Bed rest pillows

Build a Courting Seat From a Futon Frame

Step1
Buy or build a wooden futon frame. A twin or single-size frame will fit 2 people snugly. For more elbow room, choose a double-size frame.
Step2
Choose a comfortable futon pad or mattress that will fit your frame. Covers are available for the pads, or you can fashion your own out of throw blankets that will match your decor.
Step3
Pick out throw pillows for each side of the courting seat. This will provide a comfortable spot for you and your spouse to curl up on Valentine's Day or any other day.

Create a Temporary Courting Seat on the Floor

Step1
Spread out soft blankets on the floor to build the base of a temporary courting seat for you and your partner. Put your courting chair in front of the fireplace to enjoy Valentine's Day together in front of the crackling flames.
Step2
Arrange two bed rest pillows on top of the blankets. Bed rest pillows have arms and provide good back support. Overlap one arm of each pillow so that they are almost at an angle, rather than directly side by side.
Step3
Spread a fleece blanket over the bed rest pillows so you cannot distinguish where one pillow ends and the other one begins. Sharing one seat together in close proximity lends a closeness that emphasizes the point that you and your spouse are joined together as one unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • People who have the desire and know-how to build furniture may decide to make a real courting seat from scratch. For this do-it-yourself project, follow plans for building a love seat or small couch with a wood frame and padding. Your local library or home improvement store will carry books on this subject.
