Specializing in using the power of the Internet as a business marketing tool, an e-marketing manager creates and executes online marketing strategies for businesses large and small. As an e-marketing manager, you'll be expected to stay on top of industry advertising and marketing trends, find creative solutions to online marketing challenges and respond to customer and client demands.

Things You'll Need:

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree
  • HTML
  1. Step 1

Get a 4-year college degree. If you're going to go the Bachelor of Science route, a degree in computer science or information technology will serve you best. A Bachelor of Arts degree in communications or humanities also makes a good foundational base. However, a Bachelor's degree in marketing will be of the most use to you as you aim to become an e-marketing manager.

  2. Step 2

Supplement your college education with professional training in e-marketing. Technical and trade schools offer programs in online marketing, and you'll also need to master HTML to function at a professional level.

  3. Step 3

Seek out an entry-level position in e-marketing. If you already have a marketing degree, you'll be attractive to a wide range of employers. If you majored in an unrelated field, emphasize your self-acquired knowledge on your resume. It shows you're a self-starter.

  4. Step 4

Learn the business of e-marketing by starting at the entry level and working your way up. Expect junior positions to entail more analysis of current e-marketing efforts than creation of e-marketing policy. Be proactive, distinguish yourself through good work and you may be rewarded with increased responsibility.

  5. Step 5

Hone your management and delegation skills once you attain a senior position as part of an e-marketing team. E-marketing managers need an excellent command of search engine optimization and the principles of website layout. In addition, you should expect that you will report directly to the head of marketing once you become an e-marketing manager. Thus, your efforts will be directed according to company policy.

  6. Step 6

Seek to get promoted from within. More and more, companies are tending to favor the advancement of their own employees rather than hiring experienced professionals from the outside into senior management positions. The prevailing thinking is that an in-house employee has a better innate understanding of the company's policies and procedures.

  7. Step 7

Expect that you'll need at least 3 to 5 years' experience in a senior position to qualify to become an e-marketing manager. If you're planning to apply for an e-marketing manager job with a new company, plan to demonstrate several years' prior experience in the very same position with other companies.
