Instructions

    • 1

Attend college. To become an application developer, a 4-year degree in computer science will serve you best. However, as an alternative, you can also earn a degree in mathematics, information systems or another related technical field.

    • 2

Supplement your studies with courses in computer science if you're majoring in another field while in college. Application developers primarily deal with database development, data mapping and Oracle-based software applications. You can attain a knowledge of these through in-class education, from a specialized trade school or college or on your own.

    • 3

Build your knowledge base by creating your own software applications. Normally, candidates distinguish themselves from their competition through demonstrated skill. Practicing by creating your own computer programs develops both your skills and your resume.

    • 4

Learn more about the job marketplace for application developers. While the majority of jobs are with technology-centered companies, businesses of all types look to hire application developers wherever the need for customized software exists. Any industry you can think of that has a strong need for data management--finance, accounting, human resources--uses application developers.

Get plugged in to specialized resources for technology jobs. ComputerJobs.com and Tech-Jobs.com are two of the web's best-known sites catering to the employment needs of computer professionals (see Resources below).

    • 6

Apply to become a junior application developer while you're still in college. This will help you avoid falling into a post-college job slump, and the resume gaps that inevitably follow.

    • 7

Become a senior application developer after amassing 3 to 5 years of experience in a professional lab environment. Continue to refine your skill set on the job, and learn from the experience of others.

Tips & Warnings

  • Application developer jobs are usually designated as "junior" or "senior" positions. Junior positions are ideal for candidates with academic credentials but little professional experience. Senior positions will normally require, at minimum, 3 years of experience as a junior software developer.

  • Application developer jobs frequently require travel to remote sites, especially if you're employed with a larger company that has multiple subsidiary locations.
