How to Help an Endangered Species
Many of us tend to think of animals like sea turtles, elephants, tigers, rhinos and gorillas when we hear the word "endangered species." However, there are over 1300 endangered species around the world, and some of them may very well live near you. Small actions can make a big impact to help endangered species.

1
Join an organization dedicated to helping endangered species. Some organizations focus on one particular species or area of the world while others try to help many different species. You may want to donate money, write policy makers or volunteer your time by picking up litter, restoring habitats or other activities sponsored by the organization.
-
2
Learn about endangered species and their habitats by visiting national parks, wildlife refuges or nature preserves. At most of these areas, you'll find guided tours which include information on the animal species who live there. Teach children about endangered species and conservation. Volunteer to help with conservation efforts.
-
3
Protect existing habitats and reestablish them in areas where they have been lost to encourage native species to flourish and return. Consider planting native trees or plants in your garden or yard, picking up trash or working with other community members to revive natural habitats.
-
4
Don't purchase products made from endangered species or from threatened plants and animals. Buy exotic or rare pets from reputable dealers or stores which can provide the appropriate paperwork.
-
5
Recycle products to help reduce pollution and trash. Donate used items to charity, begin a compost pile and recycle everything you can. Dispose of hazardous substances like paint thinner and antifreeze properly.
-
6
Conserve energy, water and other natural resources. Turn off lights and electrical items when you're not using them. Collect rain water for watering the garden and install water conservation devices on toilets, faucets and washing machines. Bike or walk when you can instead of using a motorized vehicle.
-
7
Educate others about what they must do to help endangered species. Write articles for a local newspaper, volunteer at a nature center or teach children about conservation.
