1
Use a paper plate as your palette for a selection of colored tempera paint. When making fingerprint eggs, the brighter hues are usually more effective.
-
2
Hold the egg between your thumb and forefinger. This will allow you to rotate the egg as you apply paint with the fingertips of your opposite hand. You can also mount the egg on a skewer stuck into a piece of styrofoam.
-
-
3
Dip your thumb into the first color of your choosing. You can roll it from one side to the other to get enough paint coverage to make a rectangular thumb print, or coat just the pad of your thumb to create a more rounded image.
-
4
Blot the excess paint on a paper towel. You should have enough paint to make a good impression without the design becoming blotchy or blurred from dripping paint.
-
5
Press your thumb firmly onto the egg and lift it quickly to make your first fingerprint.
-
6
Repeat the process until the entire egg is covered with brilliantly colored fingerprints.
-
7
Decorate your eggs with charming fingerprint characters by drawing arms, legs and faces on your dried fingerprints with a fine-tip permanent marker.
-
8
Make a landscape for your fingerprint friends by painting the bottom third of your egg with a green tempera. Allow the paint to dry before adding in fingerprint people, animals and trees.
-
9
Create a polka dot effect with your fingerprints by applying white tempera on previously dyed eggs. The eggs should be completely dry before you apply your thumb prints in a staggered or linear pattern.
-
10
Sign and date each of your fingerprint eggs to preserve the memory of this special egg craft project.

Tips & Warnings
Give your fingerprint eggs a longer life by sealing the surface with craft sealer. This will protect the shell and help the tempera paint adhere longer.
Seal your finished and dried eggs with a varnish to help preserve them for years to come. This shiny coating will also add vibrancy to your applied colored tempera paints.
Have plenty of damp paper towels on hand for this messy craft.
