Decorating eggs is an essential part of the Easter holiday celebration. If you and your family have become bored of the traditionally dyed Easter egg, you can take inspiration from an equally traditional decorative method. With decoupage, you can apply pre-printed designs on to your Easter eggs to create a new Easter tradition.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eggs
  • Tissue paper
  • Craft glue
  • Small craft brush

    Prepare the Eggs

  1. Step 1

Puncture the top and bottom of a raw egg with a small needle, after washing the exterior with warm water.

  2. Step 2

Use the needle to make the bottom hole in your egg slightly larger. It should be big enough to insert a small coffee stirrer straw.

  3. Step 3

Hold the egg over a dish or the sink as you blow into the coffee stirrer to force the egg's contents out of the hole at the top of the egg.

  4. Step 4

Rinse the interior of the egg with hot water to remove any remaining egg yolk.

  5. Step 5

Allow the eggs to dry completely before you begin to decoupage a design on them.

  6. Select Your Paper

  7. Step 1

Shop for paper napkins or tissue paper with small designs. The most effective papers will be those with a small, closely spaced repeated design.

  8. Step 2

Cut out individual design motifs to decoupage onto your egg. You may wish to dye the egg first if you plan on decoupaging a design that will not cover the entire egg.

  9. Step 3

Cut a band of paper that will go around the circumference of the egg to create a more unified design. You can make the band narrow to cover only the center of the egg or extend it so that it covers the entire surface.

  10. Decoupage the Design

  11. Step 1

Mix a small amount of craft glue with water in a 2 to 1 ratio. The mixture should be fairly thin but thick enough to manipulate with a brush.

  12. Step 2

Paint a coating of the glue and water mixture around the surface of the egg. You can insert a pushpin or coffee stirrer to act as a handle when applying the glue.

  13. Step 3

Position the paper you wish to decoupage on the egg.

  14. Step 4

Brush over the paper with the glue and water mixture. Be gentle when applying this mixture, as the paper may tear.

  15. Step 5

Allow your eggs to dry overnight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Preserve your decoupaged eggs for future Easters by coating the dried eggs with shellac or a clear gloss varnish.
  • Because of the delicate nature of blown eggs, this is a craft better suited for older kids.
