How to See President's Day Events at the White House

The White House commemorates President's Day each year with a number of events taking place within the confines of the Presidential Park. Normally, the tours and exhibits take only about an hour, but the holiday brings an expanded schedule with lots to see and do. If you want to see President's Day events at the White House, a little preparation will help you make the most of the opportunity.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan to go to the White House Visitor's Center, located in the Department of Commerce Building at 1450 Pennsylvania Ave. Though the White House itself is not open to the public on President's Day, the Visitor's Center has tons of fun activities to commemorate the holiday.

    • 2

Bone up on old-fashioned games. The Visitor's Center hosts historical games from the 18th and 19th century on President's Day, and lets visitors participate in the fun.

    • 3

Memorize a famous presidential speech. The "bully pulpit" at the White House Visitor's Center lets you deliver a stirring oration to commemorate the holiday.

    • 4

Study presidential trivia. A number of contests and activities rely on your knowledge of historical facts and tidbits about various White House occupants through history.

    • 5

Prepare in advance to handle parking. There are very few parking spaces available near the National Mall, and traffic in the area is often a nightmare. The National Park Service recommends taking public transportation into the area, specifically the METRO light rail system. Otherwise, be prepared for a tough search for parking.

    • 6

Pinpoint a restaurant or food stand in the area to eat. The White House Visitors Center has no food on the premises, though a number of places are within a brief walk. The Park Service recommends making reservations in advance, since government schedules mean unpredictable crowds and some restaurants may be closed on the holiday.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're thinking about taking the White House tours on President's Day, you're in for a disappointment. Like other federal institutions, it is closed on federal holidays, and tours are not available on Mondays regardless. (If you wish to take a White House tour on another day, submit the request through the office of your local Congressman, who will help you schedule a date.)
