Zyrtec is a prescription medication that can be used to alleviate symptoms stemming from both indoor and outdoor allergies, nasal congestion and itching caused by hives. Things You'll Need:

  • Prescription for Zyrtec
  1. Step 1

Visit your doctor to discuss your allergies and get a prescription for Zyrtec. The adult form of the medication is available as tablets, chewables or a syrup. Children from 6 months of age and older can take Zyrtec syrup and the chewable tablets are approved for children older than 2 years old.

  2. Step 2

Ask your doctor for a prescription for Zyrtec-D if you need a decongestant in addition to the antihistamine in order to combat your allergies. This is an extended-release form of the drug that is effective for 12 hours.

  3. Step 3

Follow the dosage instructions exactly as they are written. Some forms of Zyrtec are taken once daily, while others can be split up and taken twice a day. Ask your doctor or pharmacist questions about the dosage if you have any doubt about it.

  4. Step 4

Put your Zyrtec in a closed cabinet or on high shelf, where animals and children cannot reach it. Keep it away from light, heat and moisture to maintain the effectiveness of the drug.

  5. Step 5

Avoid taking doses of Zyrtec too close together. If you forget a dose, take it when you remember it. If it is almost time to take another dose, take a single dose rather than doubling up on the medication.

  6. Step 6

Inform yourself about the side effects of Zyrtec. You may experience a dry mouth, dizziness, fatigue or stomach pain when first starting the medication. After your body adjusts to the drug, side effects generally lessen or disappear completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Inform your doctor of all other medicines you may be taking before you start to use Zyrtec. This includes over-the-counter and prescription medications, as well as any vitamins or herbal remedies you may use.
  • Do not take Zyrtec if you are allergic or show sensitivity to hydroxyzine or pseudophedrine.
  • Elderly people above the age of 77 years old, as well as people of any age who have a history of liver and kidney problems, may not be able to take Zyrtec. Your doctor can assess whether you can safely use Zyrtec or whether you should try another medication for your allergies.
