Claritin is an over-the-counter medication used for allergies. Both adults and children over 2 years old can take Claritin. The antihistamine component in Claritin, called loratadine, can relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies, as well as allergies to pets, mold and dust mites. Read the packaging closely to determine which formula of Claritin will be the most effective in bringing you relief.

  1. Step 1

    Speak to your doctor about your allergies before you purchase Claritin. Let him know what other medications or supplements you are taking that may interact negatively with Claritin. He may be able to suggest the formula of the medication that will best be able to help you.

    Read the Claritin packaging before your make your purchase. Original Claritin is an antihistamine that can dry up a runny nose. Claritin-D products contain a decongestant as well and can help clear your stuffy nose and head.

    Determine what format of Claritin you prefer to take. The medication is available for adults in tablets to be swallowed whole and tablets that dissolve in your mouth without the need for water. Claritin for children is available in a liquid variety, as well as in a chewable tablet form.

    Take Claritin as directed on the box. Most Claritin formulas work for 24 hours and only need to be taken once a day. Claritin D-12 can be taken twice daily.
