When you are suffering from an allergy, it's important to note what is causing it. It could be anything from pollen to dander, and if you suffer from multiple allergies, you may see different symptoms for different allergens. It's important to identify each of your allergy triggers in order to know how to deal with them and to know which are causes for concern.

Things You'll Need:

  • Doctor's examination
  1. Step 1

Wait for symptoms to occur and write down detailed information about where you were and what you were doing. This will help your doctor identify what specific dander triggers are affecting you.

  2. Step 2

Have a physical examination done by your doctor. A physical exam, particularly one done during an allergic reaction, is a great way to identify specific dander allergens that are affecting you.

  3. Step 3

Submit to a blood test by your doctor. A blood test is one of the best ways to identify allergy triggers, whether from dander or any other allergen. A blood test is able to measure the levels of antigens in your blood, which, in turn, will tell the doctor whether your body reacts to specific stimuli.

  4. Step 4

Have a skin test done by your doctor to help identify dander triggers. In a skin test, like a scratch test or an intradermal test, your skin is exposed to allergens associated with dander. The doctor is then able to see how your skin reacts and can use that data to help determine how severe your allergy is, as well as whether or not dander is even the culprit.

  5. Step 5

Read a list of allergens from an online resource like WebMD (see Resources below). WebMD keeps users informed as new allergens, treatments or diagnoses become available. In addition, the allergy section has a detailed FAQ and in-depth guides about treatment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Antihistamines are good for treating low-level allergies, whether from dander or another type of allergen. Allergies that are more severe may require prescription medication in order to lessen or eliminate the effects, so talk to your doctor about treatment options.
  • If you find your reaction to allergy triggers beginning to intensify, then it's a good idea to speak with your doctor. This could be a sign that you are growing more allergic to particular triggers. If your allergies worsen with time, they could become life threatening.
