The term dander refers to the shed skin, feathers or hair of animals, particularly house pets. For many people, dander isn't an issue, but for others, it can cause an allergic reaction that can range from mild to severe. When you are suffering from a dander allergy, it's important that you are able to recognize the symptoms and take steps to treat it before it gets out of control.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at your skin in places where an animal has had contact with you. This includes licking, scratching or even just rubbing. You'll usually be able to recognize the tell-tale signs of allergy symptoms within minutes of contact.

  2. Step 2

Note that redness and swelling are common allergy symptoms. These symptoms can occur on any part of your body, but are most common in areas where the skin is more sensitive, like the back of the hand, the neck, the eyes or the chest.

  3. Step 3

Pay attention to your eyes and note whether they become bloodshot. Bloodshot eyes is one of the easiest allergy symptoms to recognize. Bloodshot eyes usually accompanies swelling of the eyes.

  4. Step 4

Watch for sniffling and sneezing. Respiratory problems are typically the first symptoms of an allergy attack. Coughing and increased mucous levels are also common dander allergy symptoms.

  5. Step 5

Keep track of any headaches and muscle aches that develop after coming into contact with an animal. Headaches are most often associated with sniffling and sneezing as a result of swollen sinuses and glands.

  6. Step 6

Keep track of any instances of dizziness, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. These are typically considered more severe allergy symptoms. Difficulty swallowing and marked confusion are also considered severe and require immediate medical attention.

  7. Step 7

Visit WebMD online to see what new information is available about dander allergies (see Resources below). New medications and treatments become available all the time, and you can always ask your doctor what new steps can be taken to treat your dander allergies.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use an air filter like a HEPA filter or an ionic air filter to help remove allergens from the air. These devices are generally considered very effective at eliminating dander from the air circulating in your home. You should use an air filter in every room in your home, particularly those where your pets spend the most time.
  • If you are suffering from severe allergy symptoms, it is very important that you seek medical attention immediately. Anaphylaxis can be deadly if left untreated.
  • Don't rub your eyes if you are suffering from allergy symptoms. If additional allergens are present on your fingers, you're only going to end up rubbing them into your eyes and increasing the reaction.
