When seeking to staff your engineering firm, there are many options for searching for employees, and none are so simple as posting notices on the web. But to help attract the kind of employees you want, you can learn how to spread a net in just the right shape to grab hold of your preferred type of employee.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Strategize Your Search

Step1
Consider the kind of person you want to attract. If you want to attract an engineer who has had 25 or more years of experience, you may have more success through head-hunting and print ads than Internet ads. Older engineers are less accustomed to searching for jobs on the Internet.
Step2
List journals and newsletters that professional engineers in your region and industry would likely consult for job openings.
Step3
Take note of specialty sites for engineers. There are websites that are specifically geared toward engineers and where engineering jobs are posted exclusively. Many professional journals for engineers have links for posting and responding to employment opportunities.
Step4
Enlist professional engineering societies. Each specialization has one, and these societies typically have newsletters and websites where you can post ads for the engineering firm.
Step5
Post job openings on more general job search sites, such as Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com.

Post Your Ads

Step1
Contact the journal in which you want to place a classified ad, and create accounts with the job sites on which you're planning to post job openings.
Step2
Word your ads in a way that targets your preferred type of employee. Represent the firm's culture through the tone and style of your posting.
Step3
Provide an idea within the ad of the compensation package the firm is offering.
Step4
Make sure to provide your contact information. Consider creating an email address separate from the firm's primary address where inquiries can stream in.

Respond to Applicants

Step1
Provide some indication to the applicant that the firm has received the application and provide a time frame in which the applicant expect a response. Some job posting sites offer this information automatically.
Step2
Identify key criteria which are "make or break" from the engineering firm's point of view. Filter out the applicants who don't match these requirements.
Step3
Narrow down your candidates and offer interviews to the best.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try targeting techniques before posting to a mass audience. This limits the work you have to do in sifting applicants.
