How to Hang Laminated Fascia Boards

You can hang laminated fascia boards in much the same way as other types of fascia, but this material often requires an anchor piece to help secure it. For this reason, installing laminated boards can take a little longer than wood or aluminum siding.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Supporting beams
  • Power saw
  • Ladders
  • Partner
  • Hammer and nails
  • Small scaffolding
  1. Step 1

Measure and install a 1 to 1.5-inch-thick wood board to act as a support for the laminated fascia. The wood does not have to be painted, although it should be primed, sealed and as straight as possible.

  2. Step 2

Poke at the ends of any previous wood fascia to see if it needs to be replaced. As long as the wood isn't rotting, you can install the laminate fascia right on top of the older material. If the wood is thicker than 2 inches, consider taking it down or sanding it, since you don't want the new fascia to extend out past the lip of your roof.

  3. Step 3

Use a power saw to cut your laminated fascia boards to the proper length. Try to cut with a thin blade, since laminate can crack and splinter if too much force is applied.

  4. Step 4

Find out where the beams are along your exterior wall and transfer their locations to your laminated fascia boards. Make a small notch at the top of each board to mark the beams' positions. Remember that these markers will be all but hidden by the overhang of your roof, so you don't need to worry about them ruining your fascia.

  5. Step 5

Sand down any soffit boards that stick out past the edge of the roof. Avoid sanding too much, because even a small gap could allow moisture inside and shorten the lifespan of the supporting beams.

  6. Step 6

Build or rent a small scaffolding to help you hang laminated fascia along the highest points of your roof. Remember to limit the amount of weight on this support to keep it stable while you are working.

  7. Step 7

Work with a friend to hang the larger laminated boards. One person will support and press the fascia against the side of the house while the other nails it into place. Remember to drive some of the pairs of nails into beams in the wall so that your fascia will be properly supported.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you hang laminated fascia on a small area like a porch or shed, be sure that you install a horizontal 2-by-6-foot board first to add more support. These boards must also be sealed to prevent water damage.
