Step 1
Place a ladder against your house to get up close to the areas where you'll be adding the fascia. Start with your tape measure at one end of an exterior wall and measure until you reach a change in height. If you already have rain gutters installed, then you can use their length as a rough estimate for how much fascia you need to buy.
-
Step 2
Use a sliding t-bevel tool to correctly measure the angles of your fascia. Tighten the tool as much as possible when taking a measurement to get an accurate reading.
-
Step 3
Add 1 to 2 inches to the length of each fascia piece that will reach an angle. This extra room will give you more leeway as you cut the boards' ends to fit and match the gradient.
-
Step 4
Measure the length needed for each fascia piece again before you cut the boards. It's alright if some of the pieces are a little bit larger than what you need, but end pieces that are too long can be difficult to install.
-
Step 5
Take a piece of scrap wood and measure and cut the various angles that you need for practice. If necessary, you can use these pieces as a template for cutting the real fascia. Remember that you can sand down angles that are too big, but it is almost impossible to correct a board that is cut too short.
-
Step 6
Use the right tool to cut your fascia boards. Some vinyl siding can be cut with tin snips, but you can also use a plywood blade for a faster cut. Aluminum and vinyl pieces should be notched with a guiding line using a small hand knife.
-
Step 7
Take the total length of your fascia boards to figure out how many mounting screws you'll need. Convert the length to inches, divide it by six or seven and then multiply the number by two in order to get a rough estimate of what you'll need.
