Getting engaged can be one of the most exciting times of your life. It can also be a difficult subject to bring up to an ex that you still talk to. Here is how to tell your ex that you’re getting married.

1. Go over what you’re going to say to your ex in your head beforehand. You don’t want the conversation to sound rehearsed but you also want to be comfortable when the time comes to tell our ex that you’re getting married. By thinking about the conversation ahead of time, you won’t be nervous when you speak to your ex about getting married.
2. Make sure to be the first person to tell your ex that you’re getting married. After you officially become engaged, your ex probably won’t be your first phone call. However, you shouldn’t wait days and days to call your ex. Your ex will most likely be very upset if he or she finds out that you’re getting married from somebody else.
3. Determine how you want to tell your ex that you’re getting married. This will be dependent on your relationship wit your ex. You may want to tell your ex the news to her face. A simple phone call could also work in this situation.
4. Make sure to prepare your ex before you tell that person that you’re getting married. This can be as easy as just telling your ex that you have “big news.” If you say that to your ex, he or she may expect the engagement announcement.
5. Don’t tell your ex all of the details about the actual proposal unless you are asked about it. Chances are your ex doesn’t want to hear the play-by-play of you becoming engaged to another person.
6. Be completely honest with your ex about the engagement and the upcoming marriage. You don’t want to tell your ex a lie that may come back to haunt you. This could ruin any friendship that you have with your ex.
