An empty car, truck or van
Addresses of nearby large discount and liquor stores
An alarm clock

Step1

Set your alarm clock for prime box time. Big discount stores are the best source for medium and large moving boxes. Boxes are abundant in aisles only during the second and third shifts, especially between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Step2

Visit big discount stores between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Bring a short shopping list, like packing tape and markers, and tour the store with a cart. You should find broken-down boxes in shopping carts or in large boxes in the aisles. Fill your cart with various sizes of boxes, shopping list items, and proceed to check-out. Repeat as needed.

Step3

Drive your empty vehicle to your local liquor store, preferably with a short shopping list. Liquor stores are the best source for the smaller, sturdy boxes used for heavy or fragile items. Prime time to find these boxes is Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Step4

Make your purchase and load as many boxes into your vehicle as you can fit. Repeat as needed. It's easier to get rid of extra moving boxes than to look for more at the last minute.
