Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Start collecting menus. The best way to know what you can eat at a restaurant is to have a menu at your house. You can collect those by going to the restaurant and asking for one or even printing it from their website. If you have a drawer at your house with menus for all the places in your town, then you can know before you leave whether or not a restaurant is going to have food that you like.
Step2
Don't be afraid of special orders. Restaurants make their money by preparing your food the way you want it and bringing it to you. Most servers with their heads in the right place are more than happy to make your order special, because they want to please the person who is going to be leaving them a tip. If you want a sandwich without meat on it, feel free to ask for it, and they will make it for you. Just don’t forget to leave that tip.
Step3
Get used to sides and salads. As much as servers will try to help you, you’ll sometimes find that there aren’t any main dishes you can or will eat. This is the time when you go to the appetizers menu. Many salads have no meat, and you can almost always find mozzarella sticks, stuffed mushrooms and fried zucchini to hold you over until you can get home and make yourself a vegetarian main dish.
Step4
Make some calls. Many restaurants want to please their patrons, and are always looking for suggestions. If you call the restaurants or send letters expressing your desire to have more vegetarian possibilities, it may just be that you will be the one who convinces them to make the change.
