Prepare Tofu

Tofu is a great source of protein for vegetarians and vegans, but even meat-lovers can enjoy the benefits of tofu. What's basically just compressed soy milk, tofu's taste is all in the seasoning. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up some tofu from you local grocery store. It can be found at nearly any grocery store or health food store. It comes in different types such as firm and extra firm, silken or water-packed. You may need to experiment with different brands to find the one you like best.

    • 2

Silken tofu is best for preparing desserts or smoothies. It has a smoother, creamier texture. Silken tofu is also good in sauce and dressing recipes. Try substituting tofu in cheesecake, pudding, mousse, Alfredo sauce, a soup base, or for any other milk or cheese ingredient.

    • 3

For a water packed tofu, first squeeze out the excess water. This can be done by placing something heavy on top of the tofu.

    • 4

How you season the tofu is of utmost importance. If you marinade it, only marinade for about an hour, and try to avoid seasoning that is too salty. Tofu is extremely absorbent, so the longer you marinade, the stronger the taste will be.

    • 5

Next, slice, dice or crumble the tofu, depending on what meal you are making. Tofu can be crumbled to replace ricotta cheese in lasangna.

    • 6

Tofu can be cooked any way you like whether it's seared, sauteed, fried, baked or grilled. If frying, a firmer tofu will be your best option because it takes less time. Baking tofu is the easiest way to prepare it. Bake it at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, or until it has reached your desired texture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experimentation is key. Tofu is one of the most versatile cooking ingredients and the possibilities are endless.
