This is a quick and easy guide to moving a filing cabinet. It can be done either full or empty.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fridge or appliance cart with a strap built on to secure the cabinet to the cart.
  • 2 people.
  1. Step 1

If possible, lock the cabinet. Slide cabinet away from wall by tipping slightly on corners and sort of "walk" it out. Allow a least 3 feet to tip the cabinet backwards.

  2. Step 2

Move the cart to the back side of the cabinet and with the aid of person 2, tip the cabinet forward to allow the foot of the cart to go under the back of the cabinet. Attach the strap and secure to cart.

  3. Step 3

Person 1 will be behind the cart and will block the wheels from rolling as person 2 pushes the top of the cabinet backwards towards person 1. This will enable the cart to roll with person 1 pulling and person 2 pushing. Reverse the procedure to put the cabinet down.

  4. Step 4

If there are stairs to go up or down, person 1 will always be at the top of the stairs. The bottom of the cabinet should always be going down. Person 2 will help either push up or to take the weight as it comes down the stairs.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the cabinet seems to heavy, empty the drawers.
  • Use gloves.
  • Steel toes.
  • Go slow and take your time.
  • The cabinet might be to heavy even if empty for some. Hire a professional.
  • The bottom of the cabinet might be very sharp so gloves are smart.
  • If the cabinet is to heavy either stop or get a 3rd person to help.
