It’s hard to have a family full of people that agree about everything. In fact, it’s a bittersweet situation to have a family with diverse opinions. Read on to learn how to avoid politics with stubborn relatives.
Picture a relative loudly taking about what Mr. President said about a particular subject or event. If the relative isn’t talking directly to you, try to occupy yourself with another guest.
Step2
If this relative is talking to you and you don’t agree, smile and say, “Interesting that you feel that way. You seem so passionate about it. I’m glad to see that passion in you.” By focusing on the passion of the discussion, it draws attention away from the topic.
Step3
If this doesn’t deter your relative, excuse yourself and disappear to the restroom.
Step4
If your relative happens to ask you a question in regards to your opinion of the situation, calmly state, “I value your opinion, but I have a slightly different view. I love how a family derived from the same genes can have various views. Don’t you agree?” By avoiding the question and posing another question, if artfully done, you can avoid conflict.
Step5
Should the diversion not be a success, openly state your opinion and then remind the relative of your similarities. If all else fails, just excuse yourself.
