Juice fasting is a type of detox diet that involves only drinking fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juice for a period of one to three days. However, to make the juice fast as productive as possible, careful selection should go into picking the right fruits and vegetables.

Things You'll Need:

  • a store that sells organic produce and herbs
  1. Step 1

Because this is a detox diet, it's important to only select fruits and vegetables that are organic. Choosing conventional produce means that you will be ingesting more chemicals like pesticides and herbicides, which defeats the detoxification process.

  2. Step 2

Vegetables that are good for fasting include carrots for their vitamin A, small amounts of celery for taste, cucumbers, blood-building beets and cauliflower.

  3. Step 3

Green vegetables and sprouts contain chlorophyll, which detoxifies the liver, cleans the digestive tract and is even known to prevent cancer. Try cabbage, romaine lettuce, spinach, kale, or any other leafy green vegetable. Wheat grass and broccoli also have an abundance of nutrients.

  4. Step 4

Some of the best fruits to juice are berries because not only are they high in antioxidants, but they are also sweet and flavorful. Other good fruits to juice are vitamin-packed apples, pineapples, melons, kiwi fruit, mango and papaya.

  5. Step 5

Juice from highly acidic fruits like citrus fruits and tomatoes can upset the body's natural acid-base (pH) balance.

  6. Step 6

Other great ingredients to add to your juice fast are herbs and spices. Ginger, fennel, parsley, turmeric, milk thistle, basil, peppermint, spearmint and garlic all have enormous health benefits and will add great flavor to your juices.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sparing with herbs so they don't overpower the juice.
  • Experiment with different juices to find a recipe you like.
  • Do not do a juice fast if you are pregnant or nursing.
  • People with diabetes, low blood sugar, eating disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, malnutrition, addictions, underweight, anemia, impaired immune function, infection, nutritional deficiency, low blood pressure, ulcerative colitis, cancer, terminal illness, epilepsy or other chronic conditions should consult their doctor before starting a juice fast.
  • Do not try a juice fast before or after surgical procedures.
  • Juice fasting can reduce blood proteins and alter the way prescription drugs react in the body.
