Determine what type of skin you have. If your skin flakes or itches, it's likely dry. If your skin looks shiny, or you blot your face, it's probably oily. You have combination skin if you have both symptoms, and you have normal skin if you have neither.
-
2
Choose a water-based moisturizer if you have oily skin. Other moisturizers will only aggravate the problem.

-
3
Choose an oil-based lotion if you have dry skin. Avoid formulas with alcohol because it tends to dry skin even more.
-
4
If you have normal skin, pick water-based, balanced moisturizers. If you have sensitive skin, choose moisturizers that are free of dyes and scents.
-
5
Apply moisturizers shortly after bathing and drying your skin lightly with a towel. Do not remove all moisture when drying off so that you get the most from your lotion.
-
6
As you age, switch to a thicker formula, because your skin tends to get drier as you get older.
-
7
Look for lotions and moisturizers that contain sunscreen. An SPF of 15 or higher is recommended.
