    How to Avoid Artificial Sweeteners

  1. Step 1

Some studies show that artificial sweeteners, may actually be the first step in a loop that will cause the body to crave more food. They trigger an insulin response that, in turn, causes the sensation of hunger to return.

  2. Step 2

Learn how to read labels. If the words "lite" or "sugar-free" are on the label, the product will probably contain some form of artificial sweetener. Sometimes there are no indicators. Most brands of chewing gum contain some form of artificial sweetener. This is also true for most brands of chewable Vitamin C. One important thing to look for is the warning to phenylkinetics. This means that the product contains aspartame. Aspartame contains phenylalinine which is toxic to phenylkinetics.

  3. Step 3

If you notice an aftertaste, where your mouth feels slimy or slick, check the label. It will probably contain an artificial sweetener.

  4. Step 4

The chemical make up in some of the artificial sweeteners can cause chemical imbalances in the brain. These changes can cause headaches ranging from mild to severe migraines.

Tips & Warnings
  • Limit your use of artificial sweeteners. There are natural sweeteners, such as honey and stevia, that can be used in place of table sugar.
  • If you notice any reactions to an artificial sweetener, report them to your physician.
