  • a well stocked spice rack

How to Avoid Salt Without Losing Flavor

  1. Step 1

Look through your spice rack? Do you have a wide variety or just the basics? Look for seasonings such as cumin, cilantro, horseradish, dill and marjoram.

  2. Step 2

Once you have a variety to work with, mix and match. Try different temps, from mild to hot. Make your own blend of Italian or Cajun seasoning.

  3. Step 3

Read labels. Find the words salt or sodium listed in the ingredients. The closer to the top of the list they are, the more there is in that product.

  4. Step 4

Watch your processed foods. Some will use sodium as a preservative. Soups are notorious for having high sodium content. Try making some of your favorite foods from scratch. Many of them are quickly and easily made from scratch with healthier ingredients.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always read labels. Watch for words like karageenan or MSG (monosodium glutamate). Both are natural preservatives, but are high in sodium.
  • Consult your doctor and find out just how much salt you need. Some people need more than others.
