If you're excelling at your job, you have every right to ask for better compensation.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule a meeting with your manager. Meeting in person at an agreed upon time ensures that you're getting your supervisor's full attention and that you're not catching him off guard with a request.

    • 2

Do your research before going in with a request. Know what other people are making in your position. Talk to fellow employees who've had your position or talk to friends at other companies to find out what they're making. Have a clear sense of what you should be making so that you can point that out to your supervisor during negotiations.

    • 3

Assess what you bring to the company and what you have accomplished. Make a list of the results you have brought for your team and what you have done in the past. Point to important accomplishments and how you have shown leadership. Remind your supervisor how loyal you are and how invested you are in making the company better. Don't be shy about your skills and achievements.

    • 4

Be flexible with your salary expectations. If your supervisor says that the budget won't allow for a raise or the salary you want, ask to get a raise in small increments. You may suggest getting a review every 60 or 90 days for a year to assess your performance. After a certain number of reviews or after a certain amount of time you may be able to negotiate the raise.

If the company can't meet your raise or salary request, suggest getting a few extra perks such as a more flexible schedule or extra paid vacation days.
