How to Improve Your Wing Chun Skills Quickly

Wing Chun Kuen is a practical and effective form of self-defense. You must practice specific skills daily in order to learn the system quickly. Remember, you are learning how to disable an antagonist quickly and effectively, so you must simulate dangerous situations in order to practice effectively.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Practice your Sil-Num-Tao form every day, because Sil-Num-Tao is the foundation for all Wing Chun. Go through the form very slowly, breathing in during inward movements, and out during outward movements. If you are at an intermediate or advanced level, also practice your Chum Kiu and/or Biu Tze.
Step2
Find a sparring partner who is familiar with Chi-Sau. Ideally this is someone who studies at the same school as you. Arrange to meet with this partner at least twice a week, not including class. When you meet, first practice your Chi-Sau, then combat applications, and finally move on to sparring.
Step3
Buy a sandbag or iron-bag so that you can practice Iron Palm. This will condition your bones and muscles for your Wing Chun drills.
Step4
Spend time mentally visualizing your Wing Chun lessons.
Step5
Most importantly, ask your sifu what else you can do to improve your Wing Chun. Although practicing forms, applications, and Chi Sau will benefit you greatly, your Sifu knows what else you must practice to hone your skills. Make sure you let him know that you are deeply committed to the art, because your love of the art will inspire him to focus more on you.

Tips & Warnings

  • The best way to accomplish this is to pretend that you are the one with the weight problem, not her.
  • A lot of this advice depends on the girl. Some women like subtle hints, while others want your frank opinion. Either way, there’s a tactful way to suggest things, so think before you speak.
  • Make sure she feels loved and appreciated throughout the process.
  • Do not blame yourself. You are, in fact, looking out for her health. Everyone has the right to give health counsel to their loved ones.
  • There is one GRAVE danger you must not overlook: Eating disorders. Make sure that you do not allow her to fall prey to one of these horrible disorders. You should monitor her eating habits if you are worried about this, and if you notice something awry, get help from a professional.
