How to Plant a Tulip Bulb

Tulips are a great choice to liven up your garden and add a splash of color. Many varieties of tulips exist to give you the color and look you desire. Tulip bulbs are usually planted in the fall season (October through December), but this time may vary depending on the species you have selected and your local climate. Here are some tips for planting your favorite tulip bulbs.

Things You’ll Need:

Tulip bulbs
Small garden shovel or bulb planter

Step1

Select a location in the flowerbed to plant tulip bulbs. Make sure you know what kind of light and soil conditions the tulip species requires. Most tulip like a lot of sun and well-drained soil.

Step2

Dig a hole about 6 inches deep and twice the width of the tulip bulb. You can dig this hole with a small garden shovel or a bulb planter, which you press into the ground to remove a column of dirt.

Step3

Place the tulip bulb in the hole with the pointy end up.

Step4

Cover the tulip bulb with the dirt you removed from the hole.

Cover the area with 1 inch of mulch to prevent weeds and provide insulation.

Step6

Water monthly and weed frequently until the tulip blooms. After the tulip blooms, water weekly.

Tips & Warnings

If you use a bulb planter to dig the hole, make sure the ground under the hole is not compacted. This can cause the roots to sit in water and rot.
If your soil is compact, you might want to dig a larger hole and refill to loosen the soil. If necessary, mix compost or peat moss with the soil to create better drainage. Tulips require good drainage.
If planting multiple tulips bulbs, dig a ditch or hole, insert the bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart, and then cover with dirt and a layer of mulch.
