Step 1
If you wish to work in the world of publishing, study, read books for pleasure and for learning the field, write, read more books, then write again.
-
Step 2
Search for non profit websites. The ones looking for editors are out there. The easiest way to discover if they’re looking for help is to search the site map or click on careers.
-
Step 3
Don’t have a defeatist attitude. Send a letter or resume, even if you have no experience. Many times non profit groups will prefer to have you trained in their way of doing things.
-
Step 4
If you have no education, educate yourself. There are hundreds of thousands of books written on editing, writing and any other subject in the publishing field. Learn the profession from beginning to end and you’ll get much farther in your endeavors.
-
Step 5
If you are taken on as an editor be prompt and professional at all times. Never have the attitude that you aren’t being paid so why hurry for that deadline. With an attitude like that you will not get far and you will never be referred for a better position.
-
Step 6
If you are unsure of how to do something, ask. The people you are working for realize you aren’t getting paid and they don’t want to lose you. Chances are they will be happy to give their time just as you are doing.
-
Step 7
Save everything. If you are working through email keep copies of all your work on disc. If you are using the postal service, make hard copies. This is not only for your protection but also for your records.
