How to Unclutter Your Hard Drive

One of the main reasons computers slow down over time is that they, like us, get boggled down under all the information we access. Like us, they also need to take some time to organize it all for proper storage and speed. Here are some ways to get back up to speed.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • computer

Step1
The first thing you should do is to always trash any files that you no longer need. If you think you may need it in the future but would not need to add to it or alter it, you can always print it out instead of keeping the file on your desktop or hard drive.
Step2
Empty your recycle bin of these unwanted files.
Step3
Defragment your hard drive. Remember all your deleted files are still actually on your hard drive until the space is used up. Your hard drive does not organize your files for you until you do it by defragmenting.
Step4
With most up-to-date operating systems, you can get to the disk defragmenter by going to the start menu. Then go to 'all programs.' Follow this to 'accessories.' There you should see the 'disk defragmenter' and 'disk clean up' options. Run both of these processes.
Step5
When finished you might want to run a virus check and a spyware check. The processes here will depend on what software you have on your computer.
Step6
Reboot for any updates. Once you have done all this, your computer should be at least a little faster. Try it out. If you still want more speed, consider getting more memory or seeing a consultant.
