It's tempting to pack everything but the kitchen sink when you have to be away from home for several days. But when traveling for business, it's best to keep things light. After all, it's business, not a vacation. Here are some tips for light packing for business travel.

From Quick Guide: Business Travel 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pack mix and match pieces that you work together so you can create several outfits with a few pieces. For example, women can wear the same slacks or skirt with different blouses, sweaters or jackets. Men can get away with alternating black and grey pants and then bringing along several shirt that go well with both colors.

  2. Step 2

Pick one pair of shoes that go with all outfits. Choose a color scheme for the trip such as blacks, greys, or neutrals that all go with one pair of shoes. You can easily individualize each outfit with color.

  3. Step 3

Downsize your purse, especially if you travel with a computer. Consider carrying a clutch purse to hold the necessities such as cash, ID and credit cards and can be carried in your computer bag.

  4. Step 4

Take minimal make-up and toiletries. You don’t need several different colors; just the basics such as foundation, powder mascara, blush and two eye colors.

  5. Step 5

Use travel-size products. Smaller sized items such as shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, lotions, toothpaste and hairspray can save a lot of room in your suitcase and lighten your load.

  6. Step 6

Limit non-business attire to minimum. Pack one pair of jeans and one top for a casual night out. Otherwise, just pack your business clothes.
Remember, this is a business trip, not a vacation, so now is not the time to pack everything but the kitchen sink. You want to look your best, but be efficient at the same time.
