Shopping for someone in Germany or a German immigrant in the United States? For young or old, there are certain standard gifts that Germans especially appreciate. These are always welcome--for birthdays, Christmas or any day. You can also gather these together into an attractive, heaping gift basket.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider some great American microbrews. Even in view of German beer, American beer is amazing for its choice and quality. Identify your local microbrews or seasonal ales, then invest in a couple of standard or larger-sized bottles to present to a German abroad or in the States.

  2. Step 2

Think quality meats. Unless your German is a vegetarian, cured meats can be a big hit, particularly American meats that are less available in Germany. Jerky would be one example--beef, turkey, even buffalo. Any buffalo meat would tempt a German, many of whom idolize the American Wild West. Columbia River smoked salmon is another alternative.

  3. Step 3

Why not chocolate? True, Germans have some of the best quality chocolate in the world. But they do not have Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Distinctly American chocolate can be quirky and fun. Ghirardelli (the famed San Francisco chocolate) is another possible chocolate choice.

  4. Step 4

Consider that for a German immigrant to the United States, a German newspaper can be a treat. Visit an international newsstand or the nearest bookstore for a selection of German newspapers; then find the one nearest to your German's hometown. Your German will appreciate the thoughtfulness and the personal touch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Anything local, distinct and American--that is quality made--can be a fun present for a European. For instance, if you are in Montana, huckleberry jam or syrup would make an ideal gift.
  • Look for locally produced hard liquor. This is also becoming more available in the United States...a version of American schnapps.
  • When buying beer, lean toward particularly attractive or retro/nostalgic labels that emphasize the American wilderness or wild animals native to North America.
